A new weapon against the stains on our streets

Discarded chewing gum has become such a singular problem in cities around the world that a Toronto company has developed a gum-specific trash bin to fight the scourge.

The Envyrobubble, the rainbow-coloured, lollipop-shaped object seen here, is still in the marketing stage but is going to get a trial run at the corner of Church and Wellesley as soon as the company gets around to installing them.

The Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area approved installation of four of the four-foot-high refuse cans - one on each corner of the intersection - at its monthly meeting in early October.

Loredana Oliveti, the founder and president of Envyrobubble, was in Vancouver this week at a waste-management trade show. She said she and her co-founder, Ornella DeCola, who worked together in the advertising business before launching their company about a year ago, noticed that gum litter "seems to be a problem everywhere but there doesn't seem to be a solution.
